Open Meeting: Anti-Asian Violence

In this meeting, we will be discussing different types of anti-Asian violence, experiences, and how it is present on Tufts campus. We hope that from this event, people will become more aware of the different facets of violence that occur everyday life, and hopefully can come up with ways to combat it together!

Asian American Studies Minor Panel
Date: Tuesday, April 15, 2014
Tisch 316
 The panel will include a faculty member, an alumni and current students, who will talk about why the minor is important, what the minor consists of, why they chose the minor, their experiences on campus and what they will be doing in the future.

VOICES Literary Magazine Launch Party
Date: Friday, April 18, 2014
We will be celebrating the publication of our annual literary magazine through student presentations and performances, art exhibition and food!!

Asian American Community Dinner

We invite students, faculty, alumni and community leaders from the Boston area to join us for a dinner to celebrate the creation of the Asian American Studies minor and to build a stronger community! No, you do NOT have to be planning to pursue this minor or be Asian American to attend. To RSVP, please email (we just need to estimate the amount of food to order).

FUSION Concert: Featuring David Choi
 Thursday, March 13, 2014
Cohen Auditorium
 As mentioned in a previous post, Korean American singer David Choi will be coming to perform!

VOICES Literary Magazine
We are accepting submissions to our literary magazine until Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 11:59pm. Please send them There will be a launch party in April and we will post more information about that later on.

There are also a ton of events organized by other groups that you should definitely check out!

Journey to Manzanar: Forging Community Through ‘Pilgrimage’
Date: Monday, February 24, 2014
Time: 6pm-7:30pm
Location: Braker 001
What: This is the Japanese Culture Club’s annual Day of Remembrance event and they are bringing in Japanese American filmmaker Tadashi Nakamura to screen his documentary “Pilgrimage” and to discuss contemporary issues of social justice and art in activism. There will be a dinner reception following the program in the Rabb room.

Passin’ It On – The Black Panthers’ Search for Justice Documentary

What: Film screening and discussion of Jon Valadez’s documentary on Dhoruba Bin Wahad, a member of the Black Panther Party.

Crash Course Series: Nelson Mandela’s Legacy
Date: Wednesday, February 26, 2014
Time: 6pm
Location: Barnum 104
What: “Join the IR Director’s Leadership Council to discuss Nelson Mandela and his legacy with Professor Penvenne, from the History department, and Professor Robinson, from the Political Science department. Professor Murdoch, Director of Africana Studies, will be moderating the event as we explore the political impact of Mandela, as well as the future of South African politics.”

Israeli Apartheid Week 2014
Date: Week of March 3, 2014
What: This is Tufts Students for Justice in Palestine’s third annual IAW and they have many events lined up for the week, including a film screening, lectures and a student panel.

Movie Night

FUSION Concert

Tufts AAA presents its annual FUSION concert on Thursday, March 13, 2014, headlining DAVID CHOI!

David Choi is a Korean American singer based in Los Angeles, CA focused on rock, soul, and alternative music. He is widely known for his presence on YouTube, featured in videos with other Asian American celebrities such as Wong Fu Productions, KevJumba, Nigahiga, Cathy Nguyen, Kina Grannis, and Clara C.

Ticket Information

Tufts Students: General admission tickets can be bought at Cohen Box Office for $10 starting Monday, February 10! Tickets are available exclusively to Tufts students until Monday, February 17 so get them when you can! 

Non-Tufts Students: You can email or contact Harvard AAA, Wellesley KSA, Wellesley ASU, or Northeastern CSA to purchase your ticket!

VIP Tickets: These are $20 and will include a seat in the first section of the theater, a meet-and-greet with David Choi, and a signed poster by David Choi! You must reserve your VIP ticket by emailing VIP tickets are first come, first serve so email us ASAP if interested.

VOICES 2013 Highlights

Thank you to all those who showed up at our annual acoustic VOICES concert on Saturday, it was a success! We hope everyone had a great time there just as the e-board members did. We also want to thank our headliner Justin Oppus, and student performers Harrison Kim and Kaitlin Pang for sharing their music with us.

Again, thank you everyone for showing your support. We were able to raise US$170 through the raffle tickets for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Special shout-out to Justin who generously donated all of his pay for the night to the victims!


Remember to look out for our second concert of the year in the Spring semester; we will be bringing in a very special Asian America performer! Meanwhile, please continue to show your support for AAA events in the future! We need everyone’s help in order to make Asians’ and Asian Americans’ voices heard.

Gentrification: Disappearing Chinatowns – Lecture by Andrew Leong, JD

Andrew Leong, who is a professor at UMass Boston and a community lawyer, will be coming to talk about the state of Chinatowns in Boston, New York and Philadelphia. He is one of the authors of the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund‘s (AALDEF) recent report called Chinatown Then and Now: Gentrification in Boston, NYC, and Philadelphia.

This event will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at 6PM in Braker Hall 001. Food and drinks will be served. Please spread the word about this!
